As you can see I am not much of a horror enthusiast, they usually turn out disappointing. This one makes it on to the site because it is has such a mass appeal and it is scary at the end. A couple with their young boy come to Colorado to stay for the winter. The lad has a disturbing vision of the hotel at which they will stay. They think he is not feeling well and press forward into the hotel and eerily are the only guests. It gets worse. Jack the father (Jack Nicholson) slowly starts to lose it seeing ghosts. He threatens his old lady with a baseball bat. THE SHINING has long scenes which could be shortened but the chase of the boy by Jack into the hedge maze is shot well and provides a build up to scare us into how psychologically torqued Jack has become. His wife is steady and locks herself in the bathroom. Jack takes an axe to the door. A kewl outcome is the ice sculpture which has a familiar face. Nicholson is well cast and makes this film endure in our memory. [4.1 stars]
