Summer blockbuster build up made us come in to this with high expectations which were not met but it is still passable for its powerful scenes of respect for nature. Tarzan runs around the jungle with a black man (Samuel L. Jackson) who fought in the Civil War. They want to discover if there is a slave trade being perpetrated by the Belgians. They cross paths with some elephants who seem interested in seeing their old pal. An excellent quote follows "Who else can make you feel so much without a word?" The regard we should pay to this beautiful planet and its creatures is what makes THE LEGEND OF TARZAN splash on this movie review site. The action is decent but the plot is a bit hard to swallow. American cinema keeps getting better and this doesn't keep up. The best action sequence involves a train. I knew it was coming and it still delivered a kewl result. One wonders if the brooding Tarzan left too much of a hole in the screenplay. Characters that don't speak can get in the way at times though they actually may be conforming to their own reality. The love interest of the swinging star leant some good moments as did the villain of the film Rom (Alexander Skarsgard). The moviemakers stay close to Edgar Rice Burroughs, who created the Tarzan legend, and for that I am thankful. [4 stars]
