Thief (1981)

A man living in the Chicago area steals for a living and finds a girl who he can hopefully lead a new life with. He sells cars but most of his dough comes from his contraband. He is professional at it and prefers to work alone. Some Mafioso heavy wants the thief (James Caan) to work for him. The thief agrees thinking that the big money from these hits will enable him to live comfortably with his new family. He adopts a boy with the help of his new boss but that is just the beginning of his problems as he finds his new arrangement will cost him his independence, when all was set for him to stop his thieving. There is a kewl dialogue the thief has with his love interest (Tuesday Weld) showing what it takes to survive prison treatment. I found THIEF to be honest to its main character and savvy with revealing scenes that don't need talking to help us understand what drives him. [4.1 stars]
