Apollo 13 (1995)

The USA wants to send some men to the moon but they never get there. What would seem to be an odd choice for a film turns out to yield heroic characters. There is as much courage and fire here as if they went and accomplished the mission intended, guess heroes can be made in "failure" as in success. Gary Sinise plays a helmsman who is too much of a risk to go out in space so he is replaced by a new astronaut played by Kevin Bacon. Tom Hanks stars as the guy who keeps his cool and tells a tale from his exploits in the Navy that is as engaging as it is analogous to the mission's mishaps in space. The drama is intensified when we watch mission control in their position as onlooker who don't want to see bodies scorched before their very eyes. They can, however, take steps to assist a safe landing. No one noticed this craft flying to the moon until it couldn't, something that we all need to look into our soul for. [4.1 stars]
