Tsotsi (2006)

A crime drama featuring a young group of gangbangers who kill a decent man for his money making one member to question their ways. The leader of the troublemakers steals a car with a baby in it. This leads him on his own odyssey where he discovers his soul. We see the despair and indigence of South Africa along the way. TSOTSI is kewl in that it gives us a real picture of what barrenness creates in people's lives and people's values yet a ray of light shines through, as if all the faith we had put in mankind without good cause has found a small den to live amongst the lawlessness of our world. The gang leader has questions and doesn't seem totally sure of himself which makes the ultimate decision he has to make before the movie closes that much more intense. The tenderness at the heart of this film is overwhelming and I ended up with moist eyes as I tried to find a way to communicate to him that I was on his side. [4.4 stars]
