I am biased as I write this since this has been one of the jewels I have been wanting to post since I started this. Along with Darth Vader, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS puts forward one of the greatest villains in cinema, Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) who advises Clarice (Jodie Foster) of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, on the killings of a psychopath who has just taken the daughter of a United States senator. The kewl thing here is Lecter is a psychopath as well! who eats human flesh. Yet he appears sophisticated with his own sense of morality which we see in his defense of Clarice from an attacking inmate. He is so smart it makes him VERY dangerous and the way he is handled in the movie hits home what insanity he is capable of such that drips of terror seep into your heart. Foster is superb in her strength as Clarice breaks the rules her supervisor gives her despite being placed in an inferior position by the men who dominate her profession. There is a double tension in Lecter's escape and in finding the time to save the senator's daughter from being skinned alive. Indelible imprints on my soul. [5 stars]
