Das Boot (1982)

A long German film with subtitles about a German submarine fighting against British ships in the Atlantic Ocean. At the outset there is a party introducing us to officers we will see later in wartime maneuvers. The greatness of DAS BOOT is it keeps you inside the sub the whole time creating a claustrophobia or discomfort which surely must have affected the crew. It made for a kewl viewing environment to observe how the tension of war affects the equanimity of the crew. The kapitan is a veteran who is mixed in with novices making him something of a base camp for the viewer on how to gauge how things are going. I am thankful this director's cut version stayed away from the likely narration pitfall. [4.4 stars]
