Braveheart (1995)

The idea of freedom is felt strongly in this Academy Award-winning blockbuster. It goes back to the days of 13th century Scotland and its wish to stay independent from the English king Edward the Longshanks. Mel Gibson plays the main character who becomes a leader against England. His wife is killed early in the film and this theme (of their strong bond) revisits the plot again in ways that are handled beautifully.  I felt we were watching a real man and it was so kewl to see such a one handle the big stage as a man who is defiant to larger forces when it could have easily been a moment (for the rest of us) to submit. It seems that when Edward the Longshanks speaks there is frost being blown in the air, I mean can somebody please just deck this guy. BRAVEHEART is a triumph for humanity and for film. [5 stars]
