Back in early days of the Americas, before Europe has come to settle there, a small village is invaded by men who appear to be from the Mayan civilization. A young tenacious villager is one of the abductees and wants to escape to find his wife who he left at their ravaged encampment. Action sequences are first-rate and are the pulse of APOCALYPTO. I thought the event that led to the young man's eventual departure was kewl and the film took on wings at that point. The film loses points for what happened to the woman at the end of the movie, sheer overdramatism. We could have learned more of these people's beliefs and religion but it seems action is what sells movies these days. [4.2 stars]
