Not your typical alien intelligence film. South Africa finds itself with an alien spacecraft hovering above it and they soon find themselves harboring alien prawns in a shantytown. A human worker gets infected and morphs into something alien-like and has to go on the run. DISTRICT 9 captures our sense for doing what is right and what happens to this man is symbolic of what we're feeling. Some kewl effects but the bad guy here I think is barely more than a stereotype, we don't know what motivates him much like the villain in AVATAR. Really novel film with no "names" attached to it but the story will entertain and take you to unexpected places. [4.1 stars]
