A memorable Western with Clint Eastwood at the director's chair. HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER begins with a figure riding on a horse into a small town. We are never told who he is but if we read between the lines we know what this rider is, I won't ruin it and tell you what I am hinting at but it is really kewl to wait and figure out on your own why we don't get his name. This film is really Harry Callahan with a cowboy hat. The rider reminds the town of its past and in the flashbacks we gather why they are uneasy. The bad guys are 3 crim-inals coming back to town to taste revenge but in doing so we learn who these townspeople really are and what the rider has to do with them. [4.5 stars]
