Steve McQueen stars as a safecracker who is sent to French Guiana for a prison sentence. He plans an escape with Dega (Dustin Hoffman) who has the connections to get things done. At one point Papillon is sent to solitary where he almost loses it in the dreadful nearly-starving conditions. The human spirit is the hero in this film as PAPILLON works hard to survive and it is so kewl to watch, no matter what happens, how Papillon refuses to live in an unfree state. Lack of food makes him want to give up information, unforgettable. This film reminded me of A PROPHET but it is unfair to compare them as the latter may have borrowed from the former. I love them both for different reasons. [4.6 stars]
