A young man is incarcerated in a French prison and is asked to murder an inmate. Malik does not want to do it but faces brutal consequences or death if he does not. We feel for him because we learn he may not be guilty of his crime and he is exploited and treated poorly. We want fairness for him and everything he comes against shows us this may not come without a fight. A PROPHET is a foreign language film that is real, it is gritty and it is stupendous for show-ing me something about prison life that is new and for forcing me to reevaluate its role and its power in shaping those inside. An illiterate can go in and try to survive and become a leader in the criminal world outside its walls. The kewlest part of the movie is how Malik plays the angles and uses the Arabs against the Corsicans to leverage his way to better conditions. I loved this film for an honest portrayal of what the walls do to people. [5 stars]
