Hoop Dreams (1994)

Many films go wrong by having underwritten characters but here we not only have many years of living to follow but also the characters are not actors, how kewl is that.  HOOP DREAMS documents the lives of two Chicago kids as they try to reach the pinnacle of basketball, the NBA. We begin to know the boys on a closer level and when they struggle on the court we feel for them like a friend or a brother might.  Finally a movie with characters that are fleshed out.  This has many basketball highlights so it feels like a sports film rather than a documentary.  I ran through the gamut of emotions--I laughed and celebrated any smile or small victory in their lives. A remarkable chronicle. [5 stars]
