Monumental film which presents the discovery of an object on the moon in the future (from the viewpoint of 1968) that may have been buried there millions of years ago by highly intelligent beings. In the beginning of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY you see man-apes (at the dawn of man) walking around (yes, it's the right movie) but through a great edit you soon see a space-craft and learn that astronauts are re-quired on a flight to Jupiter. What this has to do with early man becomes clear when we are shown that the computer on board (and running the spacecraft virtually on its own) has been informed of certain details that the human crew have not. The ending is hard to comprehend but I definitely thought it kewl to have as the backdrop of the whole film the hidden efforts of other sentient beings. It left me pondering how we got here and where we might be going. [5 stars]
