The Right Stuff (1983)

Epic moviemaking here as the skies are conquered by a certain kind of man, a man who soars above other men, a man who has the...THE RIGHT STUFF. Tom Wolfe's book is retold here in worthier pictures. The Mercury astronauts are chosen as the United States and Russia try to be the first in outer space. I will never forget what was said about the sound barrier by intelligent engineers...reminders that we must always try to step beyond what we think is possible. Kewl footage of space travel are enough to recommend this flick but the time, the characters, the details, the movie's title are so fascinating that a mediocre treatment of it would have made it here for me to comment on.  Precious memories of the first moon landing help us all who are old enough cherish the space age, and hence, these characters, and what it all meant.
