Raging Bull (1980)

Searing story of middleweight boxer Jake La Motta and his self-destructive life.  This tale is told to you in black and white with Robert DeNiro pulling off a high level of acting in the starring role. The kewlest stuff in RAGING BULL is the constant banter between Jake and his brother. I recall Martin Scorsese making this film after a drug overdose despite his distaste for boxing. DeNiro read the book and it was shot mostly due to his promptings.  Well-done fighting scenes although one sequence is a bit over-the-top. Upon release, this is now in my view the standard for sports movies to attain. [4.9 stars]
