Four youths seeking to discover their lot in life outside of their role of being townies. There are some kewl provocative scenes of what young people want and the ending helps fulfill the aspirations the characters have shown during the film. BREAKING AWAY tries to be a sports movie as well, many people I know put it in their top ten but I like to think of this gem as a slice of Americana and a document to growing up as one can throw off identities society has foisted upon us and turn around and be another altogether new identity. Paul Dooley shines as the father and lots of racing scenes which are welcome but would be outdone by today's standards. [4.1 stars]
