Two rival magicians lock horns despite being friends. Michael Caine as Cutter figures into the picture as the engineer of the tricks and takes on the capacity of counselor/mentor like he does in other films. THE PRESTIGE is similar to ME-MENTO in the circuitous route it takes in telling the story which confuses and strains your mind. I enjoyed being teased by the director (Christopher Nolan) and being challenged by him with the line "Are you watching closely?" and feel like something magical did appear on the stage. Along the way he provides some kewl perspectives on science and obsession not to mention giving away some "secrets" of the magician's trade. The slow unwinding of the plot creates suspense and grips you as you hunger for the next "fact" which will determine your judgment as to how far each of these showmen is willing to go to be the best. Memorable and worth a few more looks, speaking of which, were you watching closely? [5 stars]
