The Guns Of Navarone (1961)

A band of British military go on an impossible mission during World War II to Greece to save some 2,000 men trapped on an island. Gregory Peck stars as Mallory who has Stavros (Anthony Quinn) along despite the latter vowing to kill him for reasons which are not shown. Mallory can speak German which is good because they eventually meet the Germans as they try to reach two big guns which are highly accurate and secluded in a fortress. The mission is changed as the krauts have a spy amongst them leading to their capture. Mallory and Stavros trick the enemy and now put on German uniforms and wait for the tanks to leave since Mallory gave one of his cohorts, who was left behind, wrong information. They use drugs which eventually makes the cohort reveal the false plan. Now they set up some some explosives which is kewl to see how they remain undetected. Whether they go off or not is left up to my dear readers to imagine. FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE has similar elements but since it copies this film, the greater of the 2, I chose to leave it off our list of films on this site. THE GUNS OF NAVARONE has what war films need, tough guys and action under the ever-present scent of death and danger. [4.2 stars]
