A linguistics professor (Amy Adams) teaches her class and her students tell her to put on the television since an epic news story is now breaking out. There are contact lens-shaped crafts of unknown origin in 12 places around the globe. Immediately I thought of INDEPENDENCE DAY but this film has no movie cliches. A military man scoops her up in a helicopter and asks her to communicate with the aliens.Yes we actually get to see them and ARRIVAL now takes nearly the rest of time left showing how she has managed to understand their language and why they came to Earth. It is rather intelligent how we come to understand extraterrestrials and, to boot, there is this element of time thrown in. No, there will be no quantum leaps or going into machines to travel about the centuries. This movie is much to sober to traverse those pedestrian maneuvers. It has emotion and purpose and delivers a poignant story full of ponderous notions. I still do not know what to think of some of what I saw and heard, which is okay since reality is like that as well. [4.5 stars]
