Whiplash (2014)

A young man with no life practices the drums all day to be great. He tells this woman he is dating that he has to break up so he can focus on being one of the greats. He enrolls in a top-notch conservatory and the leading instructor (J.K. Simmons) in jazz takes him on as an alternate. This man screams and bullies his students and we learn why he does this when the two have a conversation about music. WHIPLASH depicts the young pupil's commitment to his craft in a car accident scene. The lad can't hang in there however and is booted off the ensemble. He stops seeing his girlfriend because he wants to prove he's better than the drummer his teacher replaced him with. I took delight in the young man's dream as I had dreams when I was a boy, didn't we all, and the film scores big time for delving into that reality we had in our formative years. The ending shows the two reunited at a special event where we learn what "chops" the aspiring pupil has. [4.2 stars]
