Love & Basketball (2000)

Two youngsters who are neighbors play basketball together, one happens to be a girl. The boy gives her a hard time and she gets a scar. They see each other in high school and both play for their respective teams. LOVE & BASKETBALL is true to the sport and has nice action scenes. They seem to watch each other like they are interested. They meet at the spring dance and Quincy (Omar Epps) the boy who has now become a high school star digs her looks. They both go to USC together and date. First Quincy is a hot shot but hurts himself and then Monica (Sanaa Lathan) the girl, gets a break and starts, where she was riding the pine previously. Quincy has home problems. His dad was in the NBA but is not a good role model and cheats on his beautiful wife. He is in need of support since his dad lies to him, but Monica is laser-focused on her basketball and so he feels the need to look for love elsewhere. She gets to go to Spain and play and excels as a professional but looks around her lonely apartment and feels unfulfilled. This is where the heart strings start to pull on you. She is deserving of happiness but Quincy has found someone who he is going to marry. We get a glimpse of Monica's home life where she has a meaningful conversation with her mother about life. Now we come to the ending. I didn't like this part. They have a one-on-one contest so she can take him away from his fiancĂ©e. Yet it is kewl to see how hard she tries to get what she needs out of life. This is more a family film but it conveys accuracy about gender in the sports arena. [4.1 stars]
