The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Ten minutes into this gem, you realize you are watching a great science-fiction film and by the end you have. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK comes out blasting with outstanding vistas and realistic futuristic androids and spacecraft.  This is the second of the STAR WARS trilogy beginning with the rebels on their kewl arctic-like new base of operations which the Empire and the menacing Darth Vader desperately want to find. Their power generators are detected and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is called into action to thwart the Empire's attack along with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). Later on, we learn that Vader wants to set a trap for Skywalker by capturing Han Solo who meanwhile has taken his speedy but unreliable ship, the Millenium Falcon, to a distant planet controlled by his friend. Skywalker and Darth Vader are trained in the arts of Jedi Masters so they both, in a climactic battle, swing their light sabers at each other and we learn (spoiler alert) in an emotional scene that Darth Vader is Luke's father. I salivated during the outstanding climax but the end is not over as the THE RETURN OF THE JEDI will soon come to theaters. [5 stars]
