Training Day (2001)

A young police officer (Ethan Hawke) has to ride around with a narcotics officer (Denzel Washington) to get trained even defying death to clean up the dirt he is dealt.  Washington's character is too kewl for school and is by far the most interesting and we follow him along as he tries to pay back money he has gambled. We see drug dealers, money being robbed by the police, a police officer taking heavy drugs, corruption, shotguns and the lovely Eva Mendes with her clothes off.  The young officer's heart makes him seem an anomaly in the Los Angeles police force which is testimony I think either against the lawlessness our world has come to or the poor representation TRAINING DAY makes of the reality of it all. In either case, it is a superb story highlighting the small seeds of goodness trying to reach the light. [4.3 stars]
