The Untouchables (1987)
Our second Brian DePalma flick, where he does the Eliot Ness story of the Prohibition era. Al Capone rules Chicago and Ness (Kevin Costner), a Treasury agent, vows to stop him, but needs Jim Malone (Sean Connery) to help him who foreshadows the coming brutishness in a speech to Ness about how far they will have to go. Capone (Robert DeNiro) only drops in with caricatures of what we imagine gangsters to be, but that's fine since the story is not about him, although we should have seen a few more details of the mob boss' activities besides how he swings a baseball bat. Malone has a tip on where to go to finally nail Capone leading to a kewl creeper scene which is paced well. Costner doesn't have much to say which may be fair to capturing the Ness character but makes THE UNTOUCHABLES bland. Connery provides the humanity and heart that a film full of cliches needs.
