It's masterpieces like this that made me want to write about movies. Eery, pro- vocative and the best war film ever done, serving as a template for those that would come. An Army captain played by Martin Sheen goes down a river in search of one of America's finest soldiers, Colonel Kurtz. The scent of death, the macabre, the uncanny is all over this film and upon reflection probably captures the essence of war. I felt I understood why legions of fighting soldiers came back home disturbed and changed men. The cinematography of APOCALYPSE NOW is so kewl with its pastel of choppers, jungle, colored smoke, water and sky horizons. The climax is rewarding and remains entrenched in my memory. [5 stars]
