Emilio Estevez, as Otto, walks thru this flick like he owns the place. You can dig the guy, he's irreverent to the boss, he don't talk too much, he don't make a scene if his girl dumps him, he listens to decent vibes (the Stooges and Paul Collins Beat, okay I'm doin a bit of freelancing here), he's willing to take a few risks, he doesn't have a plan but no biggie coz a little spontaneity in life is kewl. The people we meet in this gem are definitely not cardboard cut-outs you find in other films. The reason REPO MAN has attained cult status is that it is willing to go off the beaten track and hand us oddball characters and a plot that doesn't have to maintain any preset course, Hollywood or other. I am not even sure I can tell you what the plot is but what I can say is that the ride is wild, unpredictable and funny--wait til you get to the generic food gags. There's all kinds of things going on and you don't mind because it all fits together like some newly created candy bar: there's aliens, sex, punk rock antisocialism, action sequences and some weird Christian preacher, not to mention Otto, who is the center of all this cinematic scenery. He makes it work because somehow you like him and for some reason you wanna hang out with him and see what happens. The ending misses something but as you walk away it still satisfies because you tell yourself you will never see that light ever again. [4.8 stars]
