Mulholland Dr. (2001)

You don't know what hit you when you get done with this beauty. David Lynch directs us into his surreal labyrinth of dreams and symbols and the mention is due to the fact that the genius of MULHOLLAND DR. is found more in its directing than its acting or cinematography. Part of its glory is the twists and turns it takes as you are jarred and stymied along its route. I could not get this film out of my mind as for days I tried to decipher its meaning. You meet two women, one in a car crash and the other about to enter the world of acting. Later, it seems that this is not the story at all, one of the women is returned to the scene of the accident and now you learn, at a party, that one of the women is jealous of the other and that the earlier scenes were different depictions of the truth. Where is the reality and where the dream? Where is the beginning, where the end? It's best not to say too much more because there are many levels going on and therefore many fair interpretations. There is a kewl scene showing the emotion the two women share (wink) which plays a role in your understanding of this picture since their feelings for each other are soon reversed. Spell-binding journey of emotional struggle which the mind soon muddies. [5 stars]
