When the cameras find their way in front of the characters in this movie they hit the jackpot. A case of mistaken identity leads to madcap adventure: sure the plot has weak legs but it still carries THE BIG LEBOWSKI forward but you continue to watch this flick because it brings to cinema the gift of character. And their funny and original banter. You want to go out drinking with these fellas and laugh with them and AT them. They are very entertaining even when they aren't trying to be. There is a presence of danger but the carefree attitude of the Dude (Jeff Bridges) soon dispels it and you happily hop along with them as if it was your neighbors you were with--or you wish it was your neighbors. Sure there is some swearing and some quirky things you're not quite ready for but you gently forgive them because you are having such a good time. I find the story ambles where a more direct path would have been better, yet some kewl music by Bob Dylan and CCR keeps you in your seat. Watch for the hilarious George Bush line. [4.1 stars]
