Wonder Woman (2017)

She is lovely to look at and she is royalty and she can stop bullets. We have got a good start now add a world war and a powerful villain and you have a film that I can talk about. WONDER WOMAN is a superhero flick that has our heroine at odds with her female island companions, the Amazonians. Somehow someone enters the island and she goes with this visitor without the blessings of her people. It has something to do with human beings in armed conflict, namely World War I. The mythology underlying the film is that the gods had a rebel named Ares who doesn't like humanity. Wonder Woman thinks he is causing the war and wants to stop him so she tags along a band of men put together by her love interest (Chris Pine) who also is a spy. There's a kewl scene with a rope that forces people to speak the truth. Then there is the action which is typically loud with gratuitous smashing but that's what cinema is these days but when it subsides there is a good story here and the earnestness of our star really makes the resolution of the conflict meaningful. [4.2 stars]
