Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

This is a war film but the hero doesn't touch guns and doesn't kill anybody. He doesn't smash the enemy in the face nor does he drop a bomb on them. He's a pacifist and this makes it even more interesting to watch and learn how he became the focus of a blockbuster movie. HACKSAW RIDGE shows Desmond Doss, played by unknown Andrew Garfield, getting beat by his daddy as a boy and how he meets this lovely lady by doing a humanitarian act. She works at the hospital and he studies anatomy probably because he wants to help like she does. This moment comes when there's a war and he enlists against his daddy's wishes. His father is bitter because his friends died young in the war and war never went like they were told. The funny scene comes when the sergeant (Vince Vaughn) gives all the rookies nicknames and some guy has a knife in his boot. That aside the scene does become serious as they sail off to Okinawa to do battle. Desmond calls on the Lord and someone calls out for a medic. It is not safe and everyone has left but Desmond and the wounded. Some kewl action follows and the bullets hitting everything seem as real as ever I've seen in a film. The sergeant cannot be located but as dawn breaks Desmond locates him and saves his life. His love interest rejoins him and we see the real Desmond talking to the camera at the end after the troops have defeated those animals who are known as the Japanese. [4.3 stars]
