The final hours of Jesus Christ are shown including the betrayal by Judas, the brutal flogging by the Roman soldiers, the denial by Peter, the lies by the chief priests, the compassion by the man, or is it man-god?, despite all this adversity. This is the most momentous event on Earth since the creation and thus its power never releases you from what transpires on the screen. The greatest line in cinema occurs on the road to Christ's death. His mother approaches him,her son, to bring some light to him on this dark day; and he lifts his head and says "See mother, I make all things new." Yes some atheists will groan but this encapsulates his work here and it still continues onto the second coming. A few twists on what the gospels say occurs during THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST which I liked. A bird lands on the cross next to Jesus Christ and does something to the thief who is not well-disposed to the man next to him. A raindrop, and a kewl view through it as it falls, drops from the sky as if to say how sad it is to see man's inhumanity. Gripping trenchant and unforgettable. [4.2 stars]
