Marathon Man (1976)

A student in New York likes to run long distance. He has a brother (Roy Scheider) who dresses in expensive work clothes and tells the student (Dustin Hoffman) that he is employed by an oil company but we learn that he does not. A German war criminal comes to America and meets with the brother to talk about the criminal's safety. The German (Laurence Olivier) stabs him and walks away. In pain the brother drags himself to the student and mutters some words. A man from the government tells the student that people want to know what words were spoken to him as he died. He works for the Division which remains a mysterious entity throughout MARATHON MAN but apparently the brother worked for them and not in oil. The student was being watched for the German and this brings in the love interest. This falls to the background as the German kidnaps the student and does some kewl dentistry for which I know everyone can't wait to see. We're never quite sure what his brother told him but there is a climactic battle between the old dentist and the young student which solves the dilemma running throughout the plot. [4.2 stars]
