The world is on the brink of war and the Soviet Union must trust the United States to avert a nuclear disaster. A gripping plot embellished by stark black and white cinematography as if the subject matter made color run away. The Pentagon can't stop 6 bombers from going into Moscow and try to assist the Russians in preventing World War III from breaking out. The Soviets were jamming American communications which led to an error that the President (Henry Fonda) tries to correct by imploring the Soviet premier to believe that the U.S. is not trying to trick them. The lengths to which the President is willing to go is surprising. No outside communication is allowed to the pilots but he tries and even a pilot's wife is brought in to inform them there has been a fail-safe mistake. The beads of sweat drop as we wait and the tension builds. This is the kewlest part, will anyone wig out? Despite the similarity to DR. STRANGELOVE this story is riveting and sobering to the level of trust we place in our own intelligence. [4.5 stars]
