A young man and a lady writer share witty banter at a party and soon become lovers which leads to marriage. The couple soon are on the rise & move to Missouri where their marriage becomes rocky and disenchanted. One day the husband (Ben Affleck) comes home to find blood on the floor where an apparent struggle took place, since now his wife (Rosamund Pike) is missing. The police latch onto him like he is the primary suspect and GONE GIRL is off and running. There is a darkness in this story that takes this film out of the league of the ordinary and by the time you're done with it you've been been shaken and stirred & never quite sure where you were going. But being thrown off the trail is a good thing, keeping the movie fresh and lapsing into stale detective clichés. I found the writing to be a triumph as you wrestle with the motivation of the kewl lead characters and try to catch on to the mystery which manages to elude you til the very end. [4.2 stars]
