A small town hockey team is on the chopping block and the coach (Paul Newman) maneuvers ever so subtly to keep them afloat. This is one of your better sports flicks replete with action scenes and love interests and raunchy humor. When the fun begins though is when the Hanson brothers take to the ice. Their bad manners and devil-may-care attitude takes this film out of the ordinary and into a kewl rollicking good time. The dialogue sparkles when the team gets motivated. SLAP SHOT crawls when it dwells on the coach's marriage and the moodiness of Lily, the wife of his best player. I didn't like this character. But when the gang are assembled it captures the setting of what it might be like to play professional hockey. [4.1 stars]
