Let us celebrate one of the greatest films ever on this holiday or should I write holyday. Francis Ford Coppolla directs this as well as the other 2 Godfather films, good films in their own right but since they all tell the same story I lump them together here as part of the reason why THE GODFATHER is given such a high pedestal. The viewer soon learns how the Corleone family can be violent in their struggle to stay prosperous when we hear Michael Corleone tell the story of "the offer he couldn't refuse." We see his family from Sicily engaging in clandestine businesses along with other Sicilian families and the ensuing fight between them for power and riches. We see an aging man called Vito (Marlon Brando) make executive decisions as if he was the CEO of a million dollar company. We see his sons look up to him and his youngest, Michael, try to run the family business like his father. Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) has to protect his father at the hospital and is socked in the jaw by a police officer. That night he was changed and his life takes a new course to protect and continue the family dynasty which he earlier told his girl he was going to stay away from. A kewl scene follows where the Corleone family's fate is sealed at a meeting between Michael and the people who stand in the way of the Corleone's way of doing things. Michael does something which seems opposed to his gentle character. Now the film concentrates on Michael soon to take the position as godfather where earlier Vito assumed that role. We live our lives and never hear about the kind of things that this movie shows and we realize there is an underworld beneath us and we want to learn what it is and how it works. That is why this is truly captivating material and one of cinema's classics. [5 stars]
